This Issue

Hello and welcome to the sixth edition of Getting Teamwork Right!

We had a week off over the Eid period last week, which is why this has come out a week later than normal. Apologies if you were eagerly awaiting the latest edition — but here it is today!

For this edition I wanted to share a couple of ideas for leaders of teams across two blog posts I have written: how important it is when you take over or start leading a team to make the most of the early interactions, and then the importance of vulnerability in your leadership practice.

I have included one of my absolute favourite TED Talks from Drew Dudley, as well as an amusing YouTube short about the importance of creating followers.

As always, I do hope that you find this informative and useful. If you do — please feel free to share with others and get in touch with me if you have questions, comments or suggestions for future editions. Wishing you good team health — Andy Fieldhouse

Taking Over a New Team as a Leader

The moment you step into a new leadership role, your team is already watching — and forming opinions. This post looks at why those early interactions matter so much, and what you can do in the first days and weeks to set the right tone, build trust quickly, and give yourself the best possible foundation to lead from.

Drew Dudley: Everyday Leadership

One of my all-time favourite TED Talks — and one I recommend to every leader I work with. Drew Dudley makes the case that leadership isn't about grand gestures or big titles; it's about the small moments that change people's lives, often without us even knowing it. Genuinely moving, and only six minutes long. Watch it.

Am I the Right Leader?

Vulnerability isn't a weakness in leadership — it's one of the most powerful tools a leader has. This post explores why being honest about your doubts, your limits, and your humanity makes you a more effective leader, not a less credible one. If you've ever quietly asked yourself whether you're the right person for the role, this one is for you.

Can Every Person on Your Team Answer These Three Questions?

Make sure every person on your team can answer three questions: What are we trying to achieve? What's my role? How are we doing? If anyone hesitates — or gives you a different answer to someone else on the same team — that gap is your starting point. Clarity on these three things costs nothing and fixes more than you'd expect.
